McDonalds Set to Install EV Chargers at Drive Throughs
Fast food chain McDonald’s is set to install rapid electric car chargers at sites across the UK and Ireland.
The firm has partnered with EV charging firm InstaVolt to install charging points at both new and existing drive-thrus “where they can be accommodated”, McDonald’s said. The partnership is the first of its kind in the UK.
The 125kW chargers used by InstaVolt are some of the fastest in Britain, and can charge some EVs’ batteries to 80 per cent in as little as 20 minutes. They’re also some of the highest rated by UK electric car owners.
McDonald’s has 1,300 restaurants across the UK, and while chargers are unlikely to appear at every location, the firm has said that it wants to have more charging points on its premises than any other company in the UK or Ireland.
Paul Pomroy, chief executive of McDonald’s UK & Ireland, said: “Appetite for electric vehicles, which will be a central part of the UK’s efforts to build back greener post Covid-19, is growing. This partnership and ambition takes advantage of our scale, and is a real step forward for those already driving electric vehicles, as well as people considering making the switch.
“With over 1,300 restaurants our ambition would mean you would never be far from a charging point. As we look toward a return to normal service post-Covid-19, drivers will be able to pop in for a coffee or a meal and get an 80 per cent charge in 20 minutes. We are known for speed and convenience, and this partnership with InstaVolt will provide just that for EV drivers.
