Electric Car Named the Safest Car on Sale in UK

Volkswagen ID7

The used vehicle retail platform CarGurus has shared the safest new cars on sale in the UK today, helping to keep passengers secure and surrounding road users protected.

Before a car is able to go on sale in the UK, it must undergo a variety of safety tests, which see how adults and children would fair if the model crashes and looks at the driver assistance functions fitted by the manufacturer.

According to CarGurus, which analysed data from the regulatory body Euro NCAP, the Volkswagen ID7 is currently the safest model on sale in the UK, with an overall score of 346 out of 400.

Released in 2023, this large five-door liftback is effectively an electric alternative to the long-running Passat, and features a very competitive range of up to 434 miles per charge on the Pro S model. In addition, the model is known for being particularly safe for occupants, receiving a safety score of 95 percent for adults and 88 percent for children.

Top 10 safest new cars (score out of 400):

1. Volkswagen ID7 – 346
2. Smart #3 – 345
3. Mercedes-Benz EQE – 342
4. BYD Dolphin – 340
5. Lexus RZ – 339
6. BMW 5-Series/i5 – 338
7. BYD Seal U – 336
8. BYD Seal – 334
9. Kia EV9 – 331
10. BYD Tang – 327

Another model that scored particularly well during a recent crash test was the Smart #3, a recent electric coupe-SUV that was awarded 345 points by Euro NCAP, just one less than the Volkswagen.

Whilst the Smart brand is still widely known for the ultra-tiny ForTwo, the #3 offers plenty of room for five passengers and their luggage, plus a 0-62mph acceleration time of as little as 3.7 seconds.

Much like the Volkswagen, the Smart #3 is a safe space to be for occupants of all ages, but also scored marginally better for its ability to protect any pedestrians who are hit.

Finally, drivers looking for a sleek electric luxury car that is also incredibly safe were encouraged by CarGurus to consider the Mercedes-Benz EQE, which received a score of 342.

The mid-size SUV model in the German brand’s EQ range, the Mercedes-Benz EQE has some incredible luxury features, including a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen with smartphone mirroring, heated seats in a synthetic leather, and thermatic climate control.

The Mercedes-Benz also has plenty of driver assistance functions, with the EQE scoring 85 percent for safety assistance features, in addition to a class-leading 90 percent score for child safety.
