Motability Update Issued on Vehicle Scheme

People on PIP (Personal Independence Payments) and other disability benefits may be able to get help accessing a specialised vehicle through the Motability Scheme.

The scheme now has 815,000 users across the UK, allowing eligible people to use part or all of their mobility component payment to lease a new car, a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, or a scooter or powered wheelchair – and a new update has been issued on their website for 2025. Customers also get insurance, breakdown assistance, maintenance and servicing, tyres and windscreen repairs as part of the package.

The lease package includes all these elements:

>>> Insurance
>>> Servicing and maintenance
>>> Full RAC breakdown assistance
>>> Yearly road tax
>>> Three drivers – you can change these whenever you like
>>> Kwik Fit replacement tyres
>>> Windscreen repair or replacement
>>> 60,000 mileage allowance over three years, or 100,000 for WAV Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles
>>> Many adaptations at no extra cost.

To qualify, you need to be receiving one of the qualifying benefits with the higher or enhanced rate for the mobility element, reports the Daily Record. This includes PIP, Adult Disability Payment, Disability Living Allowance, War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement and Armed Forces Independence Payment.

You can find out more about the qualifying benefits and the award level you need on the Motability website here.

The website has just been updated with a new price list for its leasing packages, with more than 800 vehicles available to choose from.

A new update on the website reads: “Our price list for April to June 2025 is now live. There are great options to choose from at every price point, so you can find the right fit for your needs.

“We’re here to help you find a mobility solution that works for you. We update our line-up every three months to make sure you always have access to the best possible choice – whatever changes are happening in the car market.”

However, the group has issued a warning about price rises, as that the costs of building and running cars has increased. The group said: “Every lease has insurance, servicing, repairs and breakdown cover included in the price you pay. So these rising costs can affect prices.”

If you want a car or wheelchair-accessible vehicle, it’s important to note that there may be an advanced fee from between £100 and £2,000.
